A group of students from Tremough University in Cornwall having just completed a CMLR course. This is the third group we have had from the Uni this year.
Since we started the group just over a year ago we have trained just over one hundred medics. This has shown that people are really interested in the work of the group. We now need have several tasks before us to make the group even more successful.
We need to raise awareness of the groups work.
We need to coordinate the medic volunteers
So far we have received only one call out to a dolphin in Penzance harbour which was dead by the time I arrived, so medics were not needed.
We recently ran a medic course for Duchy College, which was a really good day and we are looking at working with the vetinary student from the college with more training days.
We have several new things we want to look at when training, these include entanglement and the use of boats in rescues.
You may think that one medic on their own may not be able to save a dolphin but by cooling the dolphin and keeping its temperature down until other team members arrive you may have saved its life.
We have medics who are vets and medics who are Coastguards, we also have medics who own boats but I am often asked by people if they are too old. The answer is your never to old. There is always a need for people to work on the beach talking to the public and press and under the health and safety regs we do need someone to keep an eye on those in the water.
We are looking at new ways of reflotation and medic Lainy Miller recently spent some time in Florida looking at rehab facilities, which is something that needs to be assessed for this country.
We will continue to add information to this page, please contact the centre if you have any ideas for the group to look at.

We have run two courses this year for students from the new Tremough Uni in Cornwall. We have another planned for the 26th April. other courses will be run throughout the year.
A course was run on Saturday 3rd of June 2007 for fourteen new medics. The weather was great and the sea was flat and calm.
The sunshine gave us plenty of time on the beach to go over techniques for care and handling of cetaceans.
Conditions were ideal for reflotaton of the dolphin.
The new medics display their certificates at the end of the course.
We are currently creating content for this section. In order to be able to keep up with our high standards of service, we need a little more time. Please stop by again. Thank you for your interest!
