Two Common Dolphins were washed up dead on Caerhays Beach on Sunday. One of the dolphins showed signs of bycatch the other had a large wound to the side of its head with the eye missing. It is not uncommon for dead dolphins to be washed up in pairs or larger groups. During this time of the year the larger Bass fishing boats come closer to the shore especially in rough weather to escape the huge waves that the Atlantic storms bring. As they move closer to shore they dump the dead dolphins over the side and so they wash up on the beach together.
This is probably just the start of the stranding season which will continue until March, when the Bass seasion ends.

Basking Sharks are back having been seen in Falmouth bay and Sennen Cove. Bottlenose Dolphin sightings are also on the increase, the mother and baby that someone unfortunately named Cookie and Sleekie have been seen again as it was feared Sleekie was dead. These two dolphins are probably the mother and baby that swam around us while diving last May in Lamorna Cove.
We have also had a could of late dead strandings reported, one common dolphin and one harbour porpoise.
The Centre is always keen to receive sightings from members of the public. Please let us know what you see by calling 01736 364860 or email us at conservation@silverdolphin.freeserve.co.uk
